Evaluation
I think the material used for my magazine is suitable for my
target audience as the subjects relate to school life, subjects and interests
which is ideal for a sixth form magazine. The model is a sixth form student, so
the readers can relate to the front cover, and will we enticed to read on. The
front cover and content page also relate t the schools reward system, which is
a subject that will interest student readers as the will want to read about
they can win.
I feel the layout of my magazine keeps to generic
conventions, as the colour scheme stays the same throughout, and the sub titles
and text to not obstruct the model. I have also made the masthead standout
against the rest of the cover so the attention isn’t taken away from it. I have
also kept the barcode price and date in conventional areas where there are not
interrupting any of the sub headings or the model
I think that I could have used a wider variety of fonts and
texts as I stuck to a simple Varity in my magazine and didn’t experiment with
other fonts, I think if had done this my magazine would have looked better and
appealed to more people through this change. But I still feel that the magazine
worked well with the fonts I used as they not to different from one another and
they look sensible, bold and they stand out, such as the ideal student would
be.
The language used in my magazine is appropriate because it
talks on a level that students will find readable and interesting. There isn’t
any slang and so forth but the language doesn’t talk done to them, it gets the
messages and facts across with boring them or making them feel uninvolved with
the topics of the magazine.
I used many different IT skills and systems to get my
magazine the way it is now. The magazine was constructed on publisher were I
used tools such cropping resizing and using PowerPoint I cut backgrounds on the
model picture to allowing to fit. These allowed me to make the images and text
fit perfectly in to the magazine. I also used a website called dafont to make
more specialised fonts. This meant I could get more conventional text for the
masthead, sub heading and text. I also used colour variation to change the text
to blue down to white. These colours connote a calm and relaxed magazine as
would a student be if they were revising.
I have designed the text to make it readable but not boring
for a teenage pupil, this will help illustrate a school magazine that will be
readable and enjoyable for students. I also show this message through the use
of a sixth form model on the front cover, to catch their eye by using something
they are familiar too. The subjects of vivo’s and gossip about teachers will
intrigue them to read past the cover. However I think this could be improved
with better varieties of text.
I would have liked to have used more of my own images for
the magazine, particularly for my content page, I feel it would have allowed my
magazine to connect with the pupils more. But I think I did well with the
photos currently used, for example my model on the front cover was placed in
the pose he is to translate a positive and hard working student. This is
crucial for a school magazine as it makes the school look good.
I made sure the photos and texts not merge together and
obstruct the image to make sure the magazine looks professional. I have resized
and cropped the image of the model to keep him at medium close up to get the
best image possible of him. I have seized the mast head to standout but not so
large it looks up surd. I have also kept the ratio between the masthead and the
subtitles obvious, so they don’t override each other. I have also made the
smaller text clearly standout against the background, meaning the background is
coloured to make the text standout. I have also used images with coloured
background so that when text is written over it, it is easy to see and read.
Overall I am happy with the magazine cover and contents page
that I have created; I feel they connote a positive and calm magazine to sixth
formers. I think the colour schemes, content, imagery and style of my magazine
will create a good school magazine. I think it could have been improved through
the use of more personal imagery and a wider variety of texts and structure. I
also think with more time to learn the tools I used, I think I could have
improved the quality of the image and the final touches to the layering and
text, but in all I believe may magazine will make a good magazine
